Piano Disposal: READ THIS BEFORE You Dispose of Your Piano!!
Thinking of disposing of that old piano? There are piano disposal services that will come pick up and dispose of your old piano, BUT consider the following facts before you hire someone to dispose of your piano:
- Pianos disposed of end up in landfills, not in some “Piano Heaven”. That’s right, laying in a pile of garbage!
- Piano disposals take up a lot of room in landfills.
- Several thousand pianos are brought to landfills every year!
- To dispose of your piano, YOU will have to pay someone to come pick it up and dispose of it.
- Piano pick up and disposal services cost $400 or more.
- The people or company you hire may not know much about moving pianos. Pianos can damage floors very quickly when moved by an inexperienced piano mover!
- There are many people looking for free pianos, so donating, or giving away your piano can be a gift, and in some cases, a tax deductible gift!
- When you give your piano to someone, you can request they only use a professional piano mover that they will pay for, not you!
- If your piano has been in your family for a long time, having someone take it, and push it off the back of their truck in a trash heap is a very sad ending for the family piano.
When you give your piano away instead of disposing of your piano, your helping the environment, helping someone who maybe cannot afford a piano, protecting your floors from being damaged in the process, and saving MONEY! Its a win-win-win-win situation. So, at least give the piano adoption process a chance before you dispose of your unwanted piano.
DON’T DISPOSE OF YOUR PIANO!!
Give the gift of music by donating your piano and saving the planet!
If your piano has been deemed “Not Serviceable” by a Piano Technician, all is not lost! We always recommend placing the piano up for adoption anyway, and mentioning that the piano was verified “Not Serviceable” by a piano technician.
Who would adopt a piano that was not serviceable?
Pianos are adopted for many reasons, not just for being played! This may come as a surprise, but free junk pianos are sought after, and can be adopted for many reasons, like; movie scenes, used as art in a bar or restaurant, or repurposed in many other ways. The ivory on old piano keys are rare. Unfortunately, an elephant was killed for that ivory, so disposing of it would be a shame. There are laws about the repurposing of the ivory, so be aware of that. But otherwise, there are many people out there that enjoy repurposing old pianos. This is a part of history all over the world so at least give the piano a chance before disposing of it.
If you have no other choice:
Piano Movers will almost always offer piano disposal services.
