Studio upright. Maybe circa 1930?*
The most important thing to know about this piano is that the soundboard is DEFINITELY cracked. This is a fatal flaw in pianos.
Actually, the effect is that the piano is kind of ‘moody’. Sometimes, when the environment in the room is bad, it will sound very metallic and weird and maybe out of tune, and the keys will be hard to press. There might be some rattling, too. I think it needs enough humidity, but maybe air pressure etc. does something as well.
Sometimes it will basically sound fine.
And sometimes, there is just a tint of metallicness, but it’s playable.
I can provide recordings– of what it sounds like when it’s in pretty good shape, or when it’s just slightly metallic. I don’t have recordings of when it sounds awful, and I can’t promise what it will sound like when you come.
Still, the piano can have a lovely tone.
A flawed sound, but loveliness remains. I think it must have been actually quite beautiful, once.
(I think it’s best just a little below middle C, personally, except the D just below is not as good.)
Now the action occasionally needs a few fixes– and note in the D#5 area are sometimes troublesome to press, especially when the piano is being temperamental, though sometimes those notes are almost ok.
One or two keytops cracked, but that’s little problem. The black keytops are neat and satisfying and smooth.
Comes with a nice, not quite matching wooden bench.
You would need to hire piano movers, which might be $300, but perhaps I could help with some of the cost.
3 steps out to the front door, no stairs inside.
Additionally, I’ve used it as a standing desk for reading large books.
*I think this piano is from around 1930, although it looks like Vose’ production slowed down then so much so that the serial numbers become less reliable. (Also, the wood has a lower serial number than the soundboard. And something about 1974 is scratched on the soundboard, so maybe it was worked on then?)
