I have an 1868 Steinway square grand piano that I’ve owned for the last 20 years and that I love. However, we’re planning on relocating to southern Mexico next year and the insects there (not to mention the humidity) will destroy the piano. So I’m looking to give it away to someone who will use it and love it like I have and not just turn it into a desk or another piece of furniture because of its beautiful rosewood case.
I had work done on it about four years ago, replacing many of the old action parts and refurbishing others to restore it to fully functionality. It plays very well and holds its tuning very well, too. (As part of the donation, I will include the stool and the tuning hammer needed for its tuning pegs.) All but one of the key covers have been replaced with modern ivory replacement material; the remaining key cover is ivory (F2).
The piano is located in San Francisco, CA, in a Victorian flat with eight steps from the street to the front door. The piano is in the dining room, just off the main corridor. The four legs and the lyre come off for moving. The piano is roughly 7 feet wide and 4 feet deep. It does have a little sun-damage on the lid; it came to me that way. I think that some modest refinishing would bring it back to full beauty, but it doesn’t affect its playability at all.
If the piano is moved locally, the movers that I’ve used in the past charge approximately $300-$400, depending on the delivery location and stairs/elevator. As I’m giving this piano away, I’d prefer the taker to pay for the move. If that’s a hardship, let me know and we can discuss the matter further.
